The Hydrogen Road Tour was an unprecedented trip across the United States in hydrogen-powered vehicles. The trip was the brainchild of Paul Brubaker, administrator of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technologies Administration. DOT worked with the U.S. Department of Energy, California Fuel Cell Partnership and National Hydrogen Association to plan and execute the tour.
Vehicles from six automakers made the whole trip, covering 31 stops in 18 states over
13 days. Three other automakers and transit bus operators joined for part of the trip or at specific stops. Together, the caravan traveled more than 23,000 miles using hydrogen fuel produced in North America.
Dozens of organizations and businesses helped coordinate stops along the way, demonstrating that hydrogen fueling isn’t just a local issue, but also a national effort.
