Taking a spin in Kia's Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

When fuel cell vehicles debut on showroom floors, buyers can be confident that FCVs are tested for safety, performance, and fuel efficiency just as today’s vehicles are tested. As part of their analysis, Kia engineers brought a Kia Borrego Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado. For six weeks NRELNational Renewable Energy Lab scientists and engineers who are focused on a variety of hydrogen projects (from production to storage to delivery) road-tested the Kia. This learning exchange provided important on-the-road data to Kia and NREL, but more than that: scientists got first-hand experience with the consumer vehicle application of hydrogen fuel cell systems studied at the Lab. While NREL staff experienced the benefits of driving fuel cell vehicles and provided feedback to Kia, they also refueled with renewable hydrogen produced by NREL from wind and solar power.
