Wednesday, January 30, 2019 - Wednesday, January 30, 2019

Our colleagues at San Francisco’s Department of the Environment invites you to a public workshop to learn about fuel cell electric cars, fueling, and the future of hydrogen in California. Representatives from the station developer, the California Energy Commission, and the California Fuel Cell Partnership will be on hand to share information and answer questions.

When: Wednesday, January 30 from 6–7:30 PM
Where: Bernal Heights Branch Library: 500 Cortland Ave., San Francisco, CA 94110
What: Presentation and Q&A about hydrogen and fuel cells for transportation

Room capacity is 42.

Three hydrogen fueling stations are under construction at existing Shell gas stations in San Francisco:

  • 551 Third St, San Francisco, CA 94107
  • 3550 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110
  • 1201 Harrison St, San Francisco, CA 94103

WHY HYDROGEN FUELING STATIONS?
The installation of three hydrogen fueling stations in San Francisco was prompted by Governor Brown’s goal to install 200 hydrogen fueling stations in California by 2025 in order to accelerate a state-wide shift away from gasoline and diesel vehicles, which have significant air pollution and climate impacts. Similar to battery electric cars, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) have zero tailpipe emissions. Unlike battery electric cars, fuel cell cars “fill up” at hydrogen stations, usually located at gas stations, and have a range of 312 to 380 miles (EPA estimates). In cities like San Francisco, where 70% of the housing stock is multi-unit and difficult to serve with electric vehicle charging alone, hydrogen fuel cell cars are a great zero-emission alternative.

Today, there are roughly 80 fuel cell vehicles registered in San Francisco, but the nearest hydrogen fueling stations are located in South San Francisco, Mill Valley, and Emeryville.  With greater market availability and fueling convenience, hydrogen fuel cell vehicle adoption is projected to increase in cities like San Francisco over the next few years. These new hydrogen fueling stations will be able to meet projected demand both in San Francisco and regionally, and help drive a greater local shift to zero-emission vehicles.

HOW WERE THESE STATIONS FUNDED?
The three stations will be co-located at existing Shell gas stations and represent a private-sector investment with matching incentive funding provided by the California Energy Commission through a competitive process. No local or City and County of San Francisco funds were used to support these stations. Permits to construct the stations were applied for and obtained through standard processes and review by Planning, the Department of Building Inspection, and Fire Safety.
