Seeking a high-caliber postdoctoral candidate to join our growing Mobility, Behavior and Advanced Powertrains Department. The successful candidate will conduct research related to electric vehicle charging infrastructure, advanced powertrain simulation, and transportation energy and data analysis.

Relevant technologies to model and analyze include plug-in electric vehicles (plug-in hybrid and battery electric—together with associated charging infrastructure needs), alongside conventional, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles. Applications of interest span light-duty personal vehicles to medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Assessment of connected / automated vehicles and alternative mobility paradigms to traditional car ownership are also of interest. Additional activities may include:

  • Examining the interaction between availability of supporting infrastructure for advanced vehicles and consumer preference for those vehicles.
  • Working with large datasets, including acquiring data, performing quality control, analyzing, and producing visualizations.
  • Building, enhancing, and validating modeling and simulation tools.
  • Translating results into effective and influential communication products and tools tailored to client requests and audience requirements.
  • Producing high-quality publications, reports and research proposals.
  • Supporting additional related research projects as needed.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Strong collaboration skills—thrives working in a collaborative team environment, but is comfortable working independently when necessary.
  • Experience with electric vehicle charging technology and infrastructure planning concepts.
  • Familiarity with vehicle fuel economy, performance and/or cost modeling (to include familiarity with vehicle component / subcomponent modeling and supporting data requirements).
  • Expertise with relevant software tools / scientific computing / programming languages (such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, R, JavaScript, etc.), and demonstrated versatility working with various tools and approaches.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Capabilities with physics-based as well as mathematical modeling and machine-learning approaches.
  • Expertise working with large datasets, leveraging high-performance computing resources, and / or performing data analysis and visualization.
  • Established base of relevant stakeholder contacts, including analysis customers, industry collaborators, and fellow researchers.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Annual Salary Range: $68,000 - $112,200
Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
